Tapas and neighborhood bars

Tapas in Barcelona are a matter of counter and clock: weekday lunchtime or the Sunday vermouth hour. The best tapas bars are usually the least photogenic.

How to spot the right bar

Napkins on the floor, a counter full at one in the afternoon and a short menu. If the waiter opens in English and the photos show giant paellas, you are in the wrong place.

Sunday vermouth

The local tradition is the sifón hour before lunch: draft vermouth, olives, patatas bravas and good tinned conservas. Gràcia and Sants live it better than the center.

Eating well without breaking the bank

The sane bill comes from shared raciones and reading the day's menu. Many bars run a weekday menú del día that is the best value-for-money in the city.
