Vegetarian and vegan eating
The Catalan pantry —grilled vegetables, legumes, nuts and fruit— translates to vegetarian eating with unusual ease, and the city has added a full layer of vegetarian and vegan restaurants on top.
Traditional dishes that happen to be meatless
Escalivada, esqueixada's vegetarian cousins, calçot season, gazpacho in summer and mushroom autumn menus: much of the traditional repertoire needs no adaptation at all.
The dedicated scene
Fully vegetarian and vegan restaurants cluster in Gràcia, the Raval and Poblenou, from neighborhood menús to tasting menus. Reservations matter on weekends, same as anywhere good.
Asking in ordinary restaurants
Any market-driven restaurant can improvise vegetables of the day; the phrase 'algo sin carne ni pescado' works better than scanning for a symbols column on the menu.
